The Need for Future Teachers "Teaching
seems to me, beyond doubt, the greatest of the professions." American education is ever changing as we begin the new millennium. Our ideas about methodologies are changing as we discover more about how children learn, and a snapshot of today's classroom will reveal the marvelous diversity and changing demographics of our society. Our schools are in turn changing as they accept the challenge to meet the needs of all learners. However, the future of American education hangs in the balance as the prospect of a NATIONAL TEACHER SHORTAGE looms about us. As we begin recruiting young people into the field of education we are faced with the challenges of low teaching salaries, demanding working conditions, continued public scrutiny, and competition with lucrative technical jobs that take far less post-secondary education. In spite of these negatives, we must remain committed to seeking out the most talented individuals from diverse ethnic, racial, social, and economic backgrounds who will be able to fill the 2.2 million teaching positions available over the next decade. And most importantly, we must seek out individuals who have a sincere desire to give of themselves to make a real difference in a person's life. The vision of SCTEA is to help young students realize their potential as future teachers by participating with others throughout the region in the following initiatives:
