Curriculum & Instruction Reform

Curriculum and Instruction reform in teacher education at SCTEA focuses on the following two goals.

  • Improve performance of pre-service teachers through articulation of rigorous standards in the liberal arts and content areas.
  • Improve performance of program graduates by strengthening professional education programs.

SCTEA has begun the process of articulating rigorous standards and will document these changes through a Program Portfolio that will soon be published on this Web Site.  The second goal listed above addresses the need to articulate the established standards into a coherent whole for students, faculty, and LEAs.  Although CSU-Pueblo's teacher education program has adopted new standards, the 2000-2001 Curriculum and Instruction initiative will focus on transforming the current program into a truly standards based instructional model with performance-based benchmarks across the curriculum. An ongoing evaluation system which will provide information on student learning and program strengths and weaknesses.

Additional Challenges

An additional challenge for a standards based program is the development of a regional model for professional education, with students completing the first two years of study at partner colleges and returning to local communities for student teaching. Consistency in requirements and assurances that students  are prepared for admission to the program, to student teach, and for licensure are essential to maintain program integrity. We will continue to update our progress in achieving this goal on this Web Site.
